Being Happy/ Fall allergies

Did you blink and miss September? It was so warm here it seemed to still be summer! But now this week it feels like Fall has finally hit and the trees are turning colors at last.
I have been hearing LOTS of complaints about allergies this Fall. People affected with lots of congestion and vertigo as well as itchy eyes.  So I will remind you of a few tips when dealing with this.
Silver Shield liquid can be dropped in itchy eyes and squirted up congested nose to inhibit infections. HistaBlock inhibits histamine production so is a great antihistamine with none of the side effects of drugs. High Potency Garlic is a decongestant and coated with chlorophyll so it opens in intestine and does not cause digestive upset or garlic breath.
Sinus Support is another decongestant formula
DO rub on essential oils- Tea tree or Tie fu on the sinus areas- above the eyebrows, below the cheekbones (and behind the ears if dizzy)Take lots of Vitamin C as it is also an antihistamine.
And its a good reason to look forward to winter when all the pollen and mold is out of the way!

How can I afford to commit to a health program?
Many times people would really like to improve their health but complain that it is too expensive or hard to keep on a program. It is important to commit to 3 - 6 months of taking your supplements and making changes in your lifestyle to get an improvement that you can base a decision on.  To add them into your budget write down all that you spend your money on in a month- coffee, magazines, what? There is more spent on unnecessary things then you think. But even if you really don't think you can cut any fluff from your budget then consider the following option.
The Sunshine Rewards Autoship program comes every month and lets you buy at the cheapest price!  Order at least $100 of product every month, pay NO shipping AND  earn bonus credit to spend on your future orders.(change delivery time and items as you want)  So I hear you saying "But I dont need $100 of supplements each month!” but stop and look at household things you buy somewhere else. Sunshine toothpaste, Sunshine Concentrate liquid cleaner, Nature’s Fresh spray, healthy gum and mints, Pau d'Arco tea or Herbal beverage for a coffee replacement, Very Berry drink punch Sea salt and Red pepper in shakers, Solstic energy drink paks, flax oil for salad dressing (add to fresh lemon), Stock up on first aid items like Vitamin C powder, Probiotics, Tea tree oil, Peppermint oil, Lavender oil, kids Chewable vitamins,  hand sanitizer (use Silver Shield gel to kill virus up to 4 hours), lip balm, face wash and much more!
Turn your friends or family onto the great way you feel and see if they want you to buy them a bottle of something to feel as good as you. Read about all these on my website.
People appreciate hearing about YOUR solutions to the problems in today’s world- how to have more energy, sleep better, lose weight, keep you and your family healthy all winter, (try Seasonal Defense or the Elderberry formulas). Share how to take care of small first aid issues yourself and to clean the house safely without toxic products. Try sharing your good results and offering to help them get some of what you used. You will find people are looking for a better answer.

How to make junk food not enticing and Sunburn preventative

This month’s Sunshine sharing is on Junk Food. It explains the nutritional imbalances that can set us up to crave junk. If you can address some of the underlying deficiencies you will be amazed how easy it is to “change your taste buds” and find yourself preferring more healthy foods. REALLY!
Refined sugar is extremely addictive. They talk about the lack of good protein that can bring on craving but not mentioned is If you have an overgrowth of Candida Albicans yeast you will soon find your body choosing sugary food and foods that turn into sugar - breads, pasta, fruits, milk, cheese, alcohol.
There is a great cleanse to get you going in the right direction, Candida Clear, as well as Pau D’arco tea for maintenance (mix with other herb teas for variety of flavors)  I personally find that when I am especially stressed my adrenals send me to sugar to appease my elevated adrenaline rush. But I find if I take my daily Nutri-Calm (adding more when life is out of control!) then this does not happen.
One thing to help move away from JUNK is to be ready with a snack for those times you want something.Do you get cravings when you are out or at work?  Take TWO minutes to pack some nuts and dried fruit or a really tasty organic apple (there REALLY is a difference in taste of commercial and organic fruits and veggies)
GO to my blog or look up online energy balls and other snacks that are easy  to make and take.
Popcorn is a great evening snack- you can get wild and cook it in
and/or spray it with coconut oil. Add a little salt or cayenne pepper, or some parmesan cheese. It will be yummy and way healthier than the ready made.
After reading the newsletter try to decide WHAT is causing the cravings. Then take steps to do what you need to be in balance. It works!
SUNBURN season
Years ago I read an article a doctor wrote on the internet. He explained his theory that if a person has enough antioxidant intake he will not get sunburned. With the advice he had about supplements, I began using a routine that has kept me pretty much sunburn free with no sunscreen. Try it and see what you find. If expecting a heavy day of sunshine, going to the beach, being out on a boat, working in the garden at noonday, etc. I do the following:
1 tsp Vit. C Ascorbates-2000 mg
1/4 cup Thai Go Antioxidant drink
in water bottle and fill with water to drink within the first hours of your day. Be sure to shake well.
Take 1-2 Super Omega 3 Fats

Take along some Chewable Vit. C to eat every couple hours . When home have some more Thai Go and Vit. C Ascorbates. Later rub any warm/reddish skin with Emu and Lavender oil. Eat LOTS of fresh fruit and veggies all day. Its also another reason to do a super veggie/fruit juice shake in the morning with Love and Peas Protein Powder. Have FUN in the SUN!

Real Food Real Fast  To Eat in the HEAT ......Eat Light !  FISH POCKETS- wrap in foil: fish, olive oil or butter, lemon juice, salt /pepper, dill or other seasoning. Cook 5 min or more on grill. Open and finish under broiler if needed
SATAY DIP with vegetable dippers- heat up in pan till creamy
1 can coconut milk (or 1 cup regular coconut milk)
1 cup almond butter (or peanut butter)
1 Tbs tamari  (or soy sauce),
1/2 tsp chili powder,1 tsp curry powder, hot red pepper to taste
SERVE with sticks of carrots, cucumbers, celery
BANANA ICE CREAM
FREEZE 4 peeled bananas overnight.add chunks steadily to blender with 1/4 cup water (or up to 1/2 cup as needed to blend) Serve immediately.
Variations: sprinkle with nutmeg OR cinnamon. Or add raw cacao and honey. add vanilla extract, add a little yogurt or kefir

WInter: Habit Rebuilding and Warm Food

"It’s not what you do once in awhile, it’s what you do everyday” This is what to remember when focusing on your lifestyle habits. And that is what the holidays are a good example of! Times of too many rich or sweet foods, too much wine and cocktails or too much partying to find time to exercise. (or too busy to write a newsletter! Sorry!)  But now is the time to set up new daily habits to achieve your health goals. This  month's Sunshine Sharing News from Tree of Light is about what Traditional Chinese Medicine calls  “superior medicine”. It is referring to an herb or combination of herbs that restores balance to the system, improving overall health. They are meant to be taken for a longer time as a daily tonic to bring back health.
It goes on to explain the three basic energies, qi (energy) jing (moisture), shen (spirit).
It discussed the differences in Ginsengs, the action of Dong quai as a tonic for woman, Cordyceps’ use  for those with chronic lung issues, Astragulus for daily immune boost in winter and several other individual herbs. It also discusses several NSP Chinese formulas useful as tonics such as Spleen Activator to help the digestive system, KB-C for strengthening kidney function, Nervous Fatigue Formula for those who have emotional burn out due to excessive stress, along with a few other key formulas.
IF you do not receive the Sunshine Sharing newsletter as hardcopy in the mail (tthose who buy NSP at least 10 months of the year OR subscribers at $19.95 per year) you can read more about all these herbs at my website. www.herbalanswersonline.com
Along with appropriate tonic herbs there are other good habits you can include in you daily routine to maintain optimum health.
Taking a probiotic like Bifidophilous or Probiotic 11 or Sunshine Heros Probioitc power helps the body stay balanced, improving immune function (this good bacteria IS 75-80% of your immune system). Recent studies have shown how it is connected to mood and keeping you happy. It is also anti-inflammatory.
Eating a diet high in vegetables and fruits is shown over and over to help in multiple ways. This newsletter will highlight a few more recipes than usual in hopes to inspire you during these winter months to use some winter vegetables!
Exercise! Exercise! Exercise! Even little changes added help. Did you read the latest articles about how just standing burns more calories than sitting? So stand while you make phone calls, walk up and down the stairs on long calls.
Do you need some “sitting by the fire snacking” food?
Of course the old standby, popcorn is always good- spray with coconut oil for a change and try Cayenne red pepper lightly with only a minimum of salt. OR  Kale Chips oiled, seasoned and baked on low heat till crisp OR here’s something new:

SPICY ROASTED CHICKPEAS
  • 2 -15 ounce cans garbanzo beans
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • 1 tablespoon hot sauce like Tabasco Sauce
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • ¼ cup Parmesan cheese, finely grated

Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
  2. Drain and rinse garbanzo beans, then pat dry. Place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or foil. Mix the oil and hot sauce together and drizzle over the garbanzo beans. Stir to coat.
  3. Bake the beans for 35-40 minutes. Remove from the oven and season with salt and the Parmesan cheese. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Gearing up for WINTER Flu shots??

As we blast into the winter months everyone starts worrying about getting sick. SO quit worrying and start preparing to be well. Being harassed to get the flu shot? Read about the pros and cons at www.NVIC.org . If you are not interested in the shot and people continue to try to lay a guilt trip on you because “You endanger everyone by not getting it”. Simply ask these people “Did you get the shot? If it’s so effective than you should be protected, so why are you worried that you will catch something from ME?”
Then let them know you ARE strengthening your immune system by feeding it the things this important body system needs. Science now tells us 75-85% of the immune system is the good bacteria (also known as  probiotics) in your intestines. These powerful living bacteria can be weakened by antibiotics, birth control pills, steroid use, and many other  medications as well as coffee and a poor diet high in processed foods.
Along with lots of raw foods eat foods that have good bacteria in them: some yogurts(look at label), miso soup, kefir, sauerkraut, kim chi, some olives and pickles, tempeh, even high quality dark chocolate! These help replace probiotics on a daily basis.
But if you have been prone to illness, yeast infections, mood problems or in an environment that puts you in touch with lots of sick people (attention school teachers and nurses, etc!) or if you consume things that deplete your probiotics (see list above) than you really should take CAPSULES of Probiotic 11 or Bifidophilous. Start with 2 capsules once a day. If ill or at first sign of illness do as many as you can afford! At a lecture by a holistic doctor, Dr. Rodier, MD  he was asked, how many? He replied “If my patient NEEDS it I have them take 20 capsules twice a day” So take plenty!
Have you heard the latest studies that show there is a nerve that runs from the gut TO the brain? It showed how the amount of probiotics in the gut affected the mood (and even weight). They found taking probiotics may be helpful for those with depression as well. Check out  http://mercola.com and search for “probiotics, the new prozac”

Also consider adding one of the formulas that further supports the immune function in your body. Seasonal D3fense (with vitamin D3), is a great daily formula that gets rave reviews from people who tell me “It’s the first winter I did not get sick at all!!” Immune Stimulator is powerful help to take when you feel that first sign of illness and to continue till you feel 100%. A common mistake is not taking the herbs and vitamins for long enough. Usually people feel results with in hours if using the right dose, but do not stop right away! Use the program another day or two then start tapering down over the next few days. Be prepared to ramp it up if anything comes back.

Real Food Real Fast- Kale Sweet Potato Soup
2 tablespoons olive oil             1 medium onion, diced,                                                   2 cloves garlic, chopped fine          2 teaspoons fresh ginger, chopped fine           3/4 teaspoon turmeric             1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes                                3/4 pound kale, tough stems removed, roughly chopped                                           1 1/2 pounds sweet potatoes (yams), peeled and diced into 3/4-inch cubes              1 1/2 quart chicken or vegetable broth,                                                                      1 teaspoon salt                                   fresh ground pepper, to taste,                       1 cup canned unsweetened coconut milk         2 cups cooked brown rice
In a large saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat.  Add the onions and cook down until tender and translucent, about five minutes.  Add the garlic, ginger, turmeric and crushed red pepper flakes.  Cook, stirring, for about 1 minutes.Add the sweet potato chunks and stir. Add the chicken or vegetable broth and bring to a simmer. Add the kale once the broth is simmering and submerge all of the leaves, helping them to cook down. Cook for about 20 minutes, or until the sweet potatoes have become tender.Add salt and pepper to taste. Lastly, stir in coconut milk, heat through and serve over a bed of brown rice.
Now that will warm your innards on a cold winter day!  Have some of my favorite raw beet/carrot salad to bring in some raw nutrients in the winter at your other meal of the day and feel your energy SOAR

How did you begin to see the light?

I became interested  in common foods and plants that make people feel better back in the early 70s when I started leaning towards the whole earthy crunchy granola type movement. I read different herbalists' books, tried making various teas and poultices and even got some gelatin capsules at the natural foods store to fill with my own formulas. (there were no capsulated herbs for sale then) I grew a few herbs even and read all I could find. I  discovered this whole history of people out there who had been using herbs for everything for a long time. My only complaint was, there did not seem to be any one way to learn about all the great remedies. One book would tell you one method or herb that you should use and the next one I read said never use that herb and this is a better way to do that. Almost became as confusing as looking stuff up on the internet today!

In the early 80s I met Bill Fage, a sort of wandering herbal hour entertainer who came to my house and gave a great talk on about a dozen or more herbs and their uses. I asked different people over and had him come again and again. It was always the same talk but I learned so much and took lots of notes.
I realized then that Nature's Sunshine Products, which is what he used, were the answer to my problems. They had a massive research and development department as well as an incredible quality control department. It impressed me that they spent no money on ads but lots on quality control. And they had a solid educational program with live seminars taught by herbalists and natural practitioners  that I could ask questions of.
After using their products and actually getting excellent results over and over I was hooked. And so it all began: I studied more and more, went to lots of seminars and conventions all over the country where I could learn from the top leaders in the natural health field and earned several certifications and course completions.

Now after nearly 40 years of using herbs personally, I see herbs being used by all kinds of people in all kinds of settings. Sadly though, many of the products on the shelf are totally JUNK ( there is no regulation of herbal products)  so many people  do not know the power that real herbs can bring to your health.  How long will it take to get the message through that you must have the quality to see results?

Homemade Energy balls

Raw Energy Bars - these are YUMMY and will cost less than the fancy store bought ones! Recipe from Kristie McNamara at www.tilvee.com. I downloaded it from the www.5050dietplan.com. In food processor cut up 4 dates (or 1/3 cup pre-chopped dates) blend in 1/2 cup raw Agave, 1 cup Almond Butter (I did it in a bowl) MIx in:1 cup NSP powdered protein-(I used Smartmeal Chocolate but you could try Love & Peas or Nutri-Burn), 1/2 cup coconut flakes (or ground), 3 Tablespoons ground seeds like sesame or flax, 2 Tablesppons NSP Greenzone Powder, 4 tablespoons dried berries. Press into 9x13 pan (I lined with parchment paper and dusted with carob powder) keep in freezer to stay fresh and wrap in parchment or wax paper, put in baggies for traveling. Could ROLL BALLS * and coat with ground coconut or raw cacao or carob as well. **NOTE** I found they hold together better if you roll them into balls about an inch wide of course I began to vary it to suit my needs SO my latest recipe is simpler- 1 cup Almond butter 1/4 cup or more of honey 3 TBS of ground flax seed 2-4 TBS of Raw Cacao powder 1/2 cup of NSP NATURE'S HARVEST PROTEIN POWDER 1/3 CUP Cacao nibs 1/3 cup goji berries Basically I start with the wet ingredients and mix in the dry and vary it as needed to make a stiff dough that I can roll in finely chopped raw coconut powder or cacao powder or ground nuts. I wrap them in packs of two or three with wax paper and store in the freezer but you could have in a box in a cool place at work or school I imagine. just dont bring too many at once ,keep the rest fresh in your freezer. be creative and let me know how YOURS turn out

what else does a body good?

Sorry I have not been on this blog as I have been feeding my alter ego--the art instructor side of me! I just hung a huge show of my students work at the Sprinkler Factory Art gallery in Worcester MA for the month of March. I talk about it and have a couple pictures in my art blog- www.artis4every1.wordpress.com. BUT ANYWAY the point I want to make today is the powerful therapy some folks get from learning to paint with me ( it is a special method I devised that allows ANYONE to create a beautiful amazing painting) When people become artists who are severely challenged with physical or attention problems or even social standing issues in children, it gives them a new focus of self value. As an artist they are admired for this mysterious talent they display and the admiration feeds their very soul which is the spark behind our good health.
So do something that makes you proud of yourself and something you truly enjoy- it will only enhance your well being! if you are near to me, and need a new focus in life, consider taking an art class - I will bring out that hidden talent for you to enjoy- I have taught legally blind folks, quadriplegic folks, folks over 100 yrs old - beginners of all kinds. My special method ( developed in my first nursing home classes) does not require any drawing or art experience.
SO find that passion in YOUR life and play with it!

Winter is well on its way and the New year is like, HERE. So what are you doing to clean up this incredible space you were given to house your soul?
walk a little, get more raw food into you. watch some thought provoking movies. ( FOOD MATTERS is a good start) write in a journal.
SEND me YOUR way to get closer to your path.
Heres the newsletter my customers received this month with newsletters from Tree of Lite about: Diabetes, Loosing weight,Fighting Colds
JAN 2011
Its a new year and that old feeling of taking charge of your path and improving things that need a change is stronger than ever. A movie that still can motivate all ages is “SuperSize Me” with Morgan Spurlock. But my newest favorite is “Food Matters”. Watch with your whole family to get a larger picture of WHY it is so important not to eat with a blind eye. Check Netflix, buy on Amazon or doctoryourself.com
I have started to incorporate ideas from this show. One of the easiest is to drink one to two liters of water first thing before any food in the morning. This helps flush toxins OUT so cells are ready to uptake the nutrition you will give them. Also helps weight loss. Feels great -Try it!
Another interesting point in the movie was the scientist talking about how COOKED food is seen as as a toxin in the body (enzymes are destroyed with cooking) but if 51% of the diet is raw it will compensate for this. RAW can include nuts, seeds, dairy as well as fruits and vegetables. So think about where to get raw foods into your diet.
I caught a segment of the “Early Show” that featured a segment on exercise that sharpens the brain and tones the body. “Super Brain, Super Body” is the book wrote by Michael Gonzales-Wallace. Find the video clip by googling ‘Early Show’ and have started my day with the suggested 10 minutes that got me feeling UP fast ( better than caffeine!) I am resolving to start my days with 10 minutes of this, then in the evening 10 min. of Yoga or Qi Gong and a 10-20 minute lunch time walk I may be able to reach my own goal of adding some regular exercise into my VERY loaded schedule. Many reports say that just 10 min exercise sessions 3-4 times a day can make a big difference in your health. If you are as busy as me you know STRESS is a real issue for you AND exercise is one of the BEST ways to combat stress. For additional help keeping my body from feeling the inflammatory effects of stress I do nutritional stress support as well. NutriCalm, Nervous Fatigue, Stress Relief, Stress J, Stress Pack Program, Adrenal Support - all these can keep a person from feeling frazzled. People constantly tell me they are amazed at the difference they feel in many areas after using one of these products for a few days.
Online, check out Mercola.com and search for his ‘Top 10 Articles of the Year‘ there are some great pieces on several subjects. This is a good site to subscribe to.
My favorite electric appliances this year are the tiny food processor that chops a cup or so of veggies in seconds, the tiny coffee grinder that chops flax seeds. Don’t eat these whole and it’s not a good idea to buy ground meal as Flax goes rancid fast when exposed to the air. ALSO remember not to have this in great quantity with your essential fatty oils like Fish oils and flax oil as fiber can cling to oils and excrete them.

REAL FOOD REAL FAST
KALE SALAD - ALL ingredients are raw for maximum nutrition.
In a small food chopper processor, fill and chop the following (amounts can vary according to what you have or tastes)
2 medium scrubbed un-skinned CARROTS, 1 large chopped BEET -scrub skin and cut off rough spots but no need to skin, KALE (stuff into chopper 1-4 times) 1 APPLE unpeeled
Put ground vegetables into large bowl. Take stems out of remaining Kale, swiss chard, spinach or collards: chop into small bite size pieces and mix into bowl. Add walnuts or cashews, ground flax seed, flax oil, fresh lemon, Braggs cider vinegar, crumble on top Feta cheese (I like the fat free one)
For variety you can add: diced tomatoes, diced avaocado, minced red onion . Keeps well in the fridge.
CHOCOLATE GREEN DRINK - Great for a fast breakfast that delivers lots of raw energy. PUT in Blender or Vita Mix
1 or 2 bananas ( I keep peeled ones in my freezer to give it a nice texture)
1 to 2 T. cacao powder (or unsweetened cocoa powder if unavailable)
1 large handful of fresh Greens (wild or cultivated)
OR 1 scoop of NSP Greenzone powder
Add Stevia or Xylitol if desired for sweetening. Add other fruits or substitute for banana.
FLU Prevention and Relief

People getting sick all around you ? I have found if I feel any symptoms I start taking pure Vit C Ascorbates or Citrus biolflavonoids EVERY hour (or to bowel tolerance) and 5-10 Probiotic capsules ( good bacteria) 3 times a day and I can nip many flu or colds going around in 24 -48 hours. Olive leaf or Elderberry D3fense capsules help support my immune system and have antiviral properties also
Also useful if you feel any congestion are recipes our family has used successfully :

Garlic decongestant with antibiotic power:
2 cloves garlic chopped super fine. let set while you heat 1 mugful of tomato juice or broth or such (NOT in the microwave - google what do microwaves do bad to my food?)
when hot , put garlic in and slurp down - do not COOK garlic

Hot lemonade:
Helps move mucus out and feels good on a sore thoat
Use a hand juicer to squeeze 1 large lemon or 2 small ones into a large mug
add boiling water and honey to taste stir and sip while hot
also useful is the cold version:

Lemon Drink
In a gallon container mix
1 cup fresh lemon juice ( 4-5 lemons usually)
1 cup PURE maple syrup ( OR xylitol or stevia to taste - NO sugar or chemical sweeteners)
fill with water and (optional) use a shake of cayenne pepper on each glassful
drink frequently thru out the day whenever trying to clear mucus from cold or allergy

STAY AWAY FROM: dairy products, sugar, lots of white flour foods- these CREATE mucus

OIL up !
we use oregano oil on the souls of the feet to discourage virus in the body,
tea tree oil or tie fu oil on the chest to open congestion or a little on the sinus areas ( cheek bones and above eyebrows) for sinus issues (put a little olive oil on skin first if you tend to have sensitive skin)
peppermint oil on the tongue or a drop in a bowl of steaming water will open sinuses - put it with you under a towel (caution if asthmatic and mints bother you)

Mint tea,( or a drop of peppermint oil in 1 oz water) ginger tea, chamomile tea can all be soothing with stomach flu or colds

be sure to use medicinal grade essential oils and herbs only. Not sure? check out my website and there is a link to get great herbs and oils wholesale if you have not trusted source.

Get plenty of sleep and pay attention to getting lots of fruit and vegetables , raw, steamed and roasted. Drink Plenty of water ( with lemon is helpful)

say your affirmation- " I am healthy and feeling great" frequently while breathing deeply.

How to Learn More about Nutritional Medicine
Information Archive and Locating a Practitioner

(OMNS, Feb 16, 2010) We would like to take this opportunity to welcome our many new readers. We appreciate your interest in learning more about the proven benefits of nutritional medicine. Naturally, no information source can take the place of a physician.

The Orthomolecular Medicine News Service cannot answer individual readers' emailed health questions. OMNS also does not have a directory service or provide referrals to physicians. However, readers have so often asked for additional information on both of these topics that we offer the following:

Locating an Orthomolecular Doctor

If you need to locate a physician near you that uses orthomolecular (nutritional) medicine, you may wish to first try an internet search. Many practitioners have websites. Additional thoughts and cautions on obtaining a natural healing doctor will be found at http://www.doctoryourself.com/subcontractor.html and at http://www.doctoryourself.com/naturedoc.html

There is a doctor search tool at the American Holistic Medical Association (AHMA) website: http://www.holisticmedicine.org/displaycommon.cfm?an=1&subarticlenbr=49

The American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP) physician search tool will be found at http://www.naturopathic.org/

The www.orthomolecular.org website also has a self-service practitioner listing at http://orthomolecular.org/resources/pract.shtml and a partial listing of orthomolecular practitioners or treatment centers at http://www.orthomolecular.org/resources/centers.shtml

More links to practitioner directories may be found at http://www.foodmatters.tv/_webapp/Practitioner%20Directory

Your internet search will likely find others. None of these websites, nor this article, are in any way offering a recommendation for specific practitioners. It is up to you to personally inquire and specifically ask about their credentials and orthomolecular approaches to treatment as may concern you.

How To Destroy Confidence In Vitamins When You Do Not Have The Facts

(OMNS, January 11, 2010) "Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to this year's annual meeting of the World Headquarters Of Pharmaceutical Politicians, Educators, and Reporters (WHOPPER).

"Let us get right to the point. Many of our members and affiliates have complained about what is, for us, an alarming and dangerous segment of health care: so-called 'orthomolecular medicine.' We wish to assure you, although this therapeutic approach is, unfortunately, very effective in preventing and treating disease, that we will make sure the public will never learn of it. We can say this with considerable confidence, since for over 50 years we have managed to keep virtually all psychiatrists from using niacin to treat schizophrenia; we have kept cardiologists from prescribing vitamin E and co enzyme Q10 for heart disease; and we have kept general practitioners from prescribing vitamin C for viral illnesses.

"Yes, it has really been a triumphant half-century. How did we do it? It is really quite easy. Here is a summary for those of you that may have missed the last WHOPPER meeting.

"Our guiding principle is, keep the public afraid. Any fear will do, but we have been especially pleased with, and therefore recommend instilling, the fear of new strains of flu viruses, fear of vaccine shortages, and most especially, the fear of vitamin toxicity. Our success with this last one has been nothing short of spectacular.

"Of course, you know that decades of poison control center statistics show that there have been no deaths from vitamins. (1) You also know that drugs, properly prescribed and taken as directed, kill at least 100,000 Americans annually. Clearly, the last thing we want is for the public to actually figure out that vitamin therapy is tens of thousands of times safer than drug therapy.

"Therefore, we endorse the following tactics:

"1) Always demand 100% safety and 100% efficacy from nutritional therapy. This is particularly effective when you, at the very same time, continually remind the public that they have to expect and accept a reasonable amount of dangerous, even fatal, side effects with drug therapy. And, if one drug does not work, there is always another, still more expensive drug that might.

"2) Always give priority to publishing research that portrays vitamins as ineffective, or as outright harmful. Select the low-dose vitamin study; ignore the high-dose study. Our master stroke is when we criticize low-dose nutrient studies for ineffectiveness, while discrediting effective high-dose studies because they might be dangerous. Remember: pick the one negative vitamin study; ignore the hundreds of positive vitamin studies.

"3) If a positive megavitamin study is actually submitted to your department, medical society or journal, reject it on a technicality, and take a year or two to do so. Better still, make the authors publish in the Journal of Orthomolecular Medicine. After all, whatever is published there will not be indexed by the U.S. National Library of Medicine.(3) Therefore, the public's annual 700 million MEDLINE searches will utterly fail to find it. People cannot read what cannot be located.

"4) Obfuscation works. Cloud and confuse the issue. Never let the truth stand in the way of a good press release. This we learned from the tobacco industry: If you cannot wow 'em with wisdom, baffle them with baloney. Remember, with vitamins, always highlight the negative; ignore the positive. Never let the facts get in the way of as good argument. A good argument is one that you win. This is about power, not health.

"5) While half the population takes vitamins, fewer than 1% of physicians practice orthomolecular medicine. That is a very small minority. How hard can it be to shut them up? After all, look what we did to Linus Pauling. When he spoke out for vitamin C, we got the entire medical world to openly snicker at the only person in history to win two unshared Nobel prizes. Talk about a WHOPPER!

"6) Take heed of what behaviorist B.F. Skinner said: Education is a very large number of very small steps. The secret is to keep plugging away, every chance we get. Every time we tell a WHOPPER in the news media or in the medical press, it is one additional, cumulative step towards washing the public's mind clean as a whistle, and stamping out nutritional medicine for good.

"Now go back to your word-processors and get to work. Wade through those nutrition studies and latch onto the negative ones. The news media are waiting to hear from you."

The newsletters this time, one on Preventing and Dealing with the FLU and the other on Depression,
are two areas where nutritional therapies can make a big difference in your long term
recovery. The nice thing about nutritional therapy is you can often add it to other more
mainstream allopathic therapies. Contact me for advice if you’re taking medications to
verify which herbs will interact well with what you are on.
I have been reading everywhere recently about the xenoestrogens we are
exposed to. They are act like estrogen in the body, hooking into the receptor site on the
cells that is meant for estrogen BUT their action is many times stronger than normal
estrogen. This causes an estrogen imbalance. Many cancers ( breast, prostate,
reproductive organs) are “estrogen fed”. What they have discovered is that these
xenoestrogens are the culprits that feed these types of tumors. Other symptoms of
estrogen dominance are heavy menstrual flow, PMS and menopausal symptoms, edema,
increased body fat, fibrocystic breast disease, endometriosis, infertility, migraine
headaches, uterine fibroids, osteoporosis, thinning hair, low sex drive, memory loss,
acne, prostate issues. The list includes over 80 symptoms so this is only a few! Just
google “sources of xenoestrogen” and you’ll see it is coming from many things in our
environment: dairy and meat raised with hormones as well as fruits and vegetables
raised with chemical fertilizers and pesticides. The big deal recently about BPA in plastic
bottles, plastic wrap and plastic containers is because they leach xenoestrogens into
your water or food. Most contaminating is when you REuse these containers or heat in
the microwave or freeze things in them. Other culprits are the chemicals used to clean
around the house, in the laundry as well as the chemicals many slather on as lotion,
shampoo, conditioner. If the ingredient list is not something you recognize you should
not put it on your body! Do some research! Also damaging are PVC pipes, lawn
chemicals, pharmaceuticals and MORE. New research shows that one of the LARGEST
SOURCES is on store receipts due to the way they are produced! Wash your hands after
handling (read my blog for full report from a doctor who researched this).
How to protect yourself? Watch your food choices (organic is worth the $$) and
containers ( use glass and pyrex containers and wax paper bags!) Look for Burt’s Bees
shampoos and soaps as well as Aveena and watch for homemade chemical free bath
products. Make your own cleaning supplies with Borax, vinegar, and baking soda and
essential oils - check out my blog or ask me for a printout of simple recipes to use.
Another wise preventative is to use PHYTOestrogen foods and herbs. These are plants
that have a weaker estrogenic action that go in and fill the receptor sites on the cell so
that the stronger xenoestrogens can not. These do not feed tumors. Phytoestrogen
sources are Flax oil, non-GMO soy foods, Super GLA oil blend, Female Comfort blend,
Flash Ease, Natural Changes and ProGYam cream. Need more info? Ask me for the
Estrogen Dominance CD/booklet pack ($5.00) to learn more about hormones.
REAL FOOD “TO GO”, REAL FAST
JANUARY 2010
I discovered a new way to make a wrap AND get more dark leafy greens
into your diet. A friend had told me how she had heard of lightly
steaming collard greens and using them to wrap things in. As I walked in
my garden I noticed my Brussell sprout plants had large leaves at the
top that looked JUST like collards. SO I tried dipping them in boiling water
till they turned dark green and got limp (20-30 seconds). I spread on
hummus, a slice of roasted red pepper and a piece of baked seasoned
tofu (Trader Joe’s)and rolled it up. They’ve been a hit with everyone I’ve
served them to. I am going to try it with Kale and of course, some
collard greens now that my Brussell sprout plants have gone by. These
green roll-ups have been my favorite fast food lunch to pack as I race
out the door. Another quick lunch to pack is hummus with crackers,
baby carrots and fast-to-cut celery. Or try Trader Joe’s Bean Dip. Add a
piece of fruit and/or a small bag of nuts or seeds and that should hold
you till supper time! Challenge yourself to create a fast healthy lunch and
thrive.Want to add more nutrition and rev up your energy? Add the new
Solstic powdered drink stick packages. They’re easy to carry and add to
your water- full of vitamins and minerals to balance pH and give energy.

Summer/Fall - Sept 2009___________________________________________________________________________________________
We just returned from a fantastic convention with NSP in Las Vegas and my head’s swimming with all the new info and new products. I will try to give you a quick preview but DO go online at my website above and check them all out- or call me for info pages on them.
Sunshine Heros- a whole new line of children’s chewables! All have a base of antioxidant fruits and vegetables and amino acids. They are sweet and tasty like gummy bear candies and seem more like a fruit snack then a supplement. There are Multi-Vitamins and Minerals, Probiotics (with 11 strains), Calcium with D3, Whole Foods Plus Antioxidants, Omega 3 with DHA, and Whole Foods Papayazyme. Don’t leave your child unprotected during the cold and flu season- check it out.
Ionic Minerals with Acai- Adults and children that do not like capsules, should try this new liquid mineral product. Because these minerals are charged (ionic) they are easily and quickly absorbed into the cells in the intestines. Along with the Acai berry juice (a powerful antioxidant) this can help regulate pH and support the cardiovascular system .
Solstic- For those on the run there is a new drink “stick”. It’s a small pouch of natural apricot peach flavored powder with 100% or more of daily vitamin and mineral amount along with lutein (for eye health), lycopene (anti-oxidant known for role in men’s health) and stevia sweetened (no calories and diabetic safe) and NO junk like some stick drinks! Dump it in your water bottle as you run out the door or keep handy at work or the gym to give you quick nourishment and help balance your pH. It’s like Crystal Lite with a KICK!
New and Improved Weight Loss Line- NSP has made a concentrated effort to improve and update many products that will help with the Obesity Epidemic in the US. (we are #1 in the world in obesity) Two out of three people are overweight and NSP has something to help with all aspects of it. Meal replacement powders such as NutriBurn (with Whey) Synerprotein ( with Soy ) and Love and Peas (with pea protein-vegan approved) are all in new space saving resealable bags. MetaboMax Plus, Metabomax Free (with no caffeine), MetaboStart Plus (14 day program), CLA (to enhance fat burning) and Carbograbbers (with food bound chromium) have all been reformulated to be more effective than ever in the weight-loss battle. With the cooler temperatures making it easier to exercise, join me and get serious this month. NSP also has a new Weight Loss booklet (#5322-1) that explains all the ways to use the new products and other ideas to optimize your efforts. Dieter’s Cleanse is a great way to begin by getting the liver more able to process and break down the fat. Check out my Blog (above) for more ideas or ask me how to make your weight loss program more effective.
Boomerang Air Sanitizer- here is a GREAT way to protect you and your family from the swine flu and any other germs (including MRSA) with no risky side effects like a drug vaccine might have. It can clean the air of a 2000 sq ft. area of your home or office and can be moved from room to room if wanted. It is small and quiet and can even mount on the wall easily. It’s different than most air filters which usually use HEPA filters which only work on the large particles and trap contaminants in the filter creating a breeding ground which, if not changed promptly, makes the air quality worse. Boomerang’s designed to actually destroy mold, bacteria, virus and volatile organic compounds (paint fumes, nail polish, cleaning products) and odors with its unique technology, which has a patent pending for it. It’s simple to use, affordable and energy efficient. No cleaning or filter replacement for 3 years. Ask me for an air quality test and demo of this great device.
Like to use herbs and oils to HEAL YOUR PETS? Great reference charts are available from Tree of Light. Each double sided chart is full of remedies for cats, dogs, horses, or birds and can be found at their website at www.treelite.com or ask me.
Special Diet? “LIVING WITHOUT” is a magazine with recipes that are dairy, gluten, wheat and/or sugar free.
NSP Health Education Seminar- Oct.10th 9-5pm cost $35 at Clarion Hotel, West Springfield MA (just off the highway-easy to get to) Mastering the Unique Properties of Herbs, The Seven Step Candida Solution, Change your Brain Change your Life are the three topics that will be presented. CALL 800 223-8225 to register TODAY (don’t wait as they will cancel this if they do not have enough pre-registered ahead of time) Free booklets and CDs on all the subjects and excellent teachers make this a MUST DO event . Don’t miss out! See you there
Get ready for the changing seasons- cleanse and stock up to fight flu and colds-check my blog for ideas.
